Date: 11/14/2007
Date: November 14, 2007 - December 21, 2007
Time: 04:30 PM - 05:00 PM

As part of its celebration of America's food heritage, Flathead Valley Community College is opening the Montana by Food: A Taste of the Past exhibit November 14 in the Student Art Gallery in the college's Arts and Technology Building.

This show which celebrates the Treasure State's unique culinary traditions was cooked up by Montana's Museum at the Montana Historical Society in conjunction with Humanities Montana. The exhibit was designed to accompany Key Ingredients: America by Food, a national traveling exhibit that was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

Montana by Food serves up varied helpings of this all-important topic, including food production, distribution, preparation, service, and consumption. It examines the what and why of the eating habits of former generations of Montanans while illustrating how things have changed over the years as well as how they haven't.

Sponsored by the FVCC Library and Humanities Montana, the exhibit features 33 appetizing images from the Photograph Archives of the Montana Historical Society, 16 graphic reproductions of historic artifacts from Montana's Museum, and tasty vintage recipes from the MHS Library's Community Cookbook Collection. The photographs cover a wide time-span, from the 1880s to the recent past, and represent all geographic regions of the state. Recipes range from such mouthwatering treats as First Lady Betty Babcock's formula for Grandmother's Christmas Pudding to Butte's famed pasties. In addition there are recipes for historic fare like pickled beaver's tail and pork cake that might not have widespread appeal to modern palates.

New Horizons - Donna Gans @Hockaday Museum
Date: 11/7/2007
http://www.hockadaymuseum.org
NEW HORIZONS Just What’s Going On? Recent Landscapes in Paint and Mixed Media by Whitefish Artist Donna Gans From her Whitefish studio. Artist Donna Gans looks across Montana splendor beginning from her farmland homestead, moving on up the canyon, and into Glacier National Park. Those views and the powerful energy they telegraph inspire her work - stunning, abstract landscapes in mixed media. Life, painted and sculpted "just as I see it" - living, shimmering, breathing. Her work is bound to make a gallery seem smaller. It is bold, brave and exquisitely beautiful. Gans and her family moved to Whitefish 15 years ago from New York, a change of scenery reflected in the shift of her art work. While New York inspired ocean colors and the vigor of cities and architecture, Montana brings earthy color, organic texture and raw magnificence. It has been said that Donna Gans has redefined the notion of Western Landscape.
